Concepts and reason

The chemical reaction in which alcohol or ketone reacts with excess alcohol in the presence of acid undergoes the formation of product called acetal. It is an important functional group as it present in sugar.

Fundamentals

Steps for the formation of acetal:

The carbonyl oxygen of ketone or aldehyde undergoes Protonation with the help of acid. Then it undergoes Nucleophilic attack by alcohol. Therefore, Hemiacetal is formed by the deprotonation. Again it undergoes Protonation to form protonated alcohol and cleaves in the form of water molecule. The alcohol undergoes Nucleophilic attack on carbonyl carbon and finally it undergoes deprotonation to form acetal as product.

One of the most important uses for Grignard reagents is their addition to carbonyl compounds to give new carbon-carbon bonds. In this reaction, the carbon of the organometallic compound acts as a nucleophile to add to the positive carbon of the carbonyl forming an alkoxide ion intermediate. Aqueous acid is used in the second step to protonate the alkoxide ion and form the product alcohol. Draw the structure of the product(s) of step 1 when the following compound reacts with...
