Question

1.4. DRAWING FIELD LINES 1.4 Drawing Field Lines 1. Sketch electric field lines for the following four situations: a single positive charge; two positive charges separated by a distance d; a negative and a positive charge separated by a distance d; and two negative charges separated by a distance d. For each sketch, assume that all of the charges have the same magnitude and use at least 8 equally space field lines exiting from each charge. Use the circles below as the charges.

You don't need to sketch, the above picture is just as background/reference for the actual question:

Answer #1

Electric fields at points very far away are as given below

a) Single positive charge: fade away going away from the charge.

b) Two positive charges: fade away going away from the charge combination. Fade away soon if the points are outward from the line joining the two charges and fade away later at points between the two charges.

c) Positive and Negative: fade away from the positive charges in a direction opposite to negative charge. Grows from zero to non zero away from negative charge opposite to positive charge. Move from positive to negative in between the charges.

d) grow from zero to non zero going towards the charges. Weak outside the charges and strong between the charges.

An electric field can be created by a single charge or a distribution of charges. The electric field a distance from a point charge has magnitude E = k|q'|/r^2. The electric field points away from positive charges and toward negative charges. A distribution of charges creates an electric field that can be found by taking the vector sum of the fields created by individual point charges. Note that if a charge is placed in an electric field created by q',...
