Complete this assignment using complete sentences in a paragraph format, and be sure to check your spelling when complete. It is now possible to have human embryos produced via in vitro (test tube) fertilization (IVF) tested for many different genetic diseases such as Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anemia, a form of Alzheimer’s disease, and BRCA1 associated cancers among others. Those embryos that have the gene for any of these diseases will be discarded and only those embryos lacking the disease-causing genes will be used for implantation into the potential mother. The technique used to do this is called “pre-implantation genetic diagnosis” (PIGD). It is also possible for sperm/egg donor banks to carry out a fertilization event on paper before it is done in vitro. This way, prospective parents can reduce the risk of having a child with some genetic disorder. Weigh in on the topic of PIGD in conjunction with IVF pointing out what you think are the pros and cons of this developing and ever-improving technology. In 200 words.

Answer #1

Pre-implantation- genetic diagnosis (PIGD) is aimed at diagnosing whether the embryos about to transfer do not carry chromosomal abnormalities. PIGD screen genetic issue that can cause recurrent miscarriages or lack of implantation. So,PIGD is offered to couples who have a child who is affected by genetic disease.or when there are other members of the family who are affected by a known genetic disease PIGD is normally offered to couples who had either recurrent miscarriages, women trying to conceive with advanced age. or recurrent IVF failures because the embryos transferred may had an abnormal makeup of chromosomes.During PIGD the genetic makeup of the embryos is verified before they are  transferred to the mother's womb. The purpose of PIGD is to prevent genetic disorders transferred to future generation. In IVF procedure when embryos reach the 8 cell stage embryo biopsy is performed. These cells are tested for genetic screening and transferred to the uterus. But the disadvantages of PIGD is it could be used to screen embryos for non-medical traits with the possibility of selecting for the desired gender and physical traits. This leads to homogenized society .PIGD is expensive it is an option only for the rich.Children with Leukaemia, sickle cell anaemia can benefit from receiving a genetically healthy siblings tissues. This can have serious ethical and emotional consequences for all involved. There is also an ethical concerns regarding the purpose of saviour siblings. PIGD is banned due to ethical concerns in some countries such as Switzerland,Austria and Ireland. The aim of PIGD is to promote better life quality to those with genetic disorders not to create the perfect tailor made babies.
