Lactose intolerance and sensitivity appears to be a growing phenomenon in this country. Even though many people limit or avoid dairy products in their diet, they seem to still suffer from symptoms.

  • What would account for this fact?
  • What characteristics may predispose individuals to become lactose intolerant and/or sensitive?
  • What dietary options that would be feasible for individuals who are lactose intolerant/sensitive allow them to meet critical nutrient needs such as calcium, riboflavin, and vitamin D?

1)We should remember that lactose not only present in diary products but also present in non diatery food materials such as cereal,bread etc.So even though people avoid diary products they may still suffer from symptoms.

2)Lactose intolerance occurs to people who cannot cannot breakdown lactose,prolonged diarrhea, malnutrition and certain medicines and sometimes genetic conditions.

3)They can meet nutrients such as calcium,riboflavin, vitamin D by taking fermented products of milk such as hard cheese, yogurt,kafir etc.
