Artesian well. In some places, the water underground is at a pressure high enough that it will flow up and out of the ground without the need of a pump. Figure P10.99A shows an example, which is called an artesian well. Part B of the figure shows how this flow can happen. Loosely speaking, the level of the well is lower than the upper surface of the groundwater, which is also called the water table. Suppose the outlet of an artesian well is 2.5 m below the water table. Approximately what speed will the water have when it comes out of the well? Ignore the viscosity of the water.
