This project shows you from where to configure the desktop theme in Windows XP, Vista, 7, Server 2003/Server 2003 R2, or Server 2008/Server 2008 R2.

To configure the desktop theme in Windows XP or Windows Server 2003/Server 2003 R2:

1. Click Start and click Control Panel.

2. Select to use the Classic View in the left side of the Control Panel window, if this view showing icons is not displayed in the window.

3. Double-click Display.

4. Make sure that the Themes tab is selected.

5. What Theme selection is currently displayed in the Theme box?

6. Click the down arrow to display all of the selections in the Theme box. What options are available? Record your observations.

7. Close the Display Properties dialog box.

8. Close the Control Panel window.

To configure the desktop theme in Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008:

1. Click Start and click Control Panel.

2. If you don’t see a listing of icons, click Classic View on the upper left side of the window.

3. Double-click Personalization.

4. In the Personalization window, click Theme (see Figure 1-19).

5. What Theme selection is currently displayed in the Theme box?

6. Click the down arrow to display all of the selections in the Theme box. What options are available? Record your observations.

7. Close the Theme Settings dialog box.

8. Close the Personalization window.

To configure the desktop theme in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2:

1. Click Start and click Control Panel.

2. If you don’t see a listing of icons, click the View by button at the top right portion of the Control Panel window then click Small icons on the menu.

3. In Windows 7, click Personalization in the All Control Panel Items window. In Windows Server 2008 R2, notice that there is no Personalization option and so there is no option to customize the theme. The Windows Server 2008 R2 theme is set up as a modified Windows 7 desktop theme. If you are using Windows Server 2008 R2 close Control Panel or go on to Step 4 if you are using Windows 7.

4. In Windows 7, scroll through the themes that can be selected.

5. Is it still possible to use a Windows Classic theme?

6. List four of the Aero Themes that are presented by default.

7. Close the Personalization window in Windows 7.
