Solutions For An Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry Chapter 14 Problem 6Q

Step-by-Step Solution

Solution 1

Muscle atrophy is the muscle wasting disease. This disease can be caused due to further disease or injury which occurs in the body. This disease does not allow the muscle to move hence, muscle wasting occurs due to lack of muscle activity. The muscle appears to be weak and smaller than the other.

There are various treatments for muscle atrophy and one of them is treatment with miotine. Miotine exists as an uncharged compound due to which it is able to cross the blood-brain barrier. Due to this, it reaches the central nervous system and causes various side effects.

Miotine is a cholinesterase inhibitor. To reduce the side effects of Miotine on central nervous system, we can increase its polarity, so that it is less likely to have effects on central nervous system. Miotine does not have an ammonium group to give it a permanent positive charge.
