Alfred Adler was once the associate of Freud; later, in the year 1911, he Freudian concepts. He then developed his own theory, which was dominated by the social interests. Adler was born in a rich family; however he was rejected by his mother and he became quite jealous of his brother. He used to remain ill for very long periods. He became more close to his father rather than his mother.
He proposed that the necessity could make a person rise from the lower level to a higher level; and it was extracted from his own life. Once he had no money to pursue a career, when his teacher asked him to take up a shoe maker job. He later worked hard and perused his career in psychology. He developed his self-esteem that was not gained during his childhood.
After experiencing a near to-death incident during his suffering from pneumonia, he determined to become a physician. Later he got a degree in ophthalmology and also attended the weekly session of Freudian psychoanalysis. However, he was not personally related to Freud. He established his own personality theory. It clashed with the Freudian’s theory, especially on the sexual factors, which Freud generally laid his emphasis upon.
Adler worked as physician in the Austrian camps, during the World War I. He later developed a theory, known as individual psychology, which wooed many of the followers. His personality, that is warmth, geniality and optimism, made him to be accorded as a celebrity amongst the people. Adler focused more on the social forces rather than on the biological instincts.
He proposed that the social interactions lead to the achievement of the life goals and not just the sexual instincts. Freud proposed that the incidents to which an infant is exposed is responsible for shaping his personality; however, according to Adler the relations that the individual establish, as he grows and his goals, hopes and desires also help in conditioning the personality of an individual.
