Sexual response of humans is divided into 4 phases and a dysfunction can take place in any of these 4 phases. The four stages are as mentioned below:-

Desire phase : In this phase there a fantasy about sexual activity and a strong desire to indulge in sex.

Arousal or excitement phase : This is a phase of physiological changes along with sexual pleasure. In this phase the males get an erection of penis and female’s vagina gets lubricated and clitoris gets enlarged.

Orgasm : It is the third stage in which the sexual pleasure is at the peak. The partners go for an intercourse once they attain this stage of response.

Resolution : It is the phase of relaxation and contentment. The intercourse is completed by ejaculation. And a feeling of well being is experienced in this phase. All the stored energy is vent out in the act of intercourse.

A dysfunction can occur at any of the first three stages of the sexual response. The inability to attain satisfaction in sexual activity results in a dysfunction. Males are diagnosed for this symptom if they show no interest and total aversion towards sex. The other type of dysfunction seen in males is failure to get an erection or inability to hold the erection for long. The third type of dysfunction can be premature ejaculation. Some men also have the problem of delay in ejaculation. Delay in ejaculation also indicates an inability to ejaculate.

For females, the dysfunction is diagnosed by their lack of interest towards sex or by their difficulty to get aroused. The orgasm is not enough for the sufficient lubrication of their vagina. Women also have the penetration disorder due to reasons like fear or anxiety. Certain time they tighten the muscles of the pelvic floor making the penetration tough. And some women experience tremendous pain in the vulvovaginal region at the time of intercourse. All these reasons make them dysfunctional for sexual activity.
