The personal notion of oneself as male or female is called gender identity. A gender variant is also referred by the term gender nonconformity. A gender variant is one whose expression of gender does not match to the thoughts of the society about him/her. The individual shows certain deviations with respect to expression of sex related characteristics.

Gender dysphoric people prefer to undergo a sex reassignment surgery. And they feel satisfied after undergoing a sex change. A man who appears to be a man by his looks externally, may exhibit behavior and intentions like that of a woman. And a woman who has very feminine features may have desires and inclinations like that of a man in matters related to sex. This type of contradicting personality and behavior is called as Gender variant.

Sexual variants are referred to as paraphilias. They exhibit recurring instances of sexual behavior and arousal lasting for a certain period of time. These people derive pleasure in sex by unusual behavior by making use of inanimate objects or by indulging in unnatural rituals and situations. Sexual variants are more common in men as compared to women.
