Sound and Pitch, frequency, and complex sounds
The speed of sound in an ideal gas is given by the relationship
where R = the universal gas constant = 8.314 J/mol K; T = the absolute temperature; M = the molar mass of the gas in kg/mol; and g is a characteristic of the specific gas. For air, y = 1.4 and the average molar mass for dry air is 28.95 g/ mol. (a) Show that the equation gives you correct units. (b) Give reasons why the temperature of the gas is in the numerator and the molar mass of the gas is in the denominator.
