Reflection and impedance and Superposition principle and skills for analyzing wave processes
Sound wave in Earth A sound wave created by an explosion at Earth’s surface is reflected by a discontinuity of some type under Earth’s surface (Figure P20.30). Determine the distance from the surface to the discontinuity. Does the discontinuity have a greater or lesser impedance to sound than the surface above it? Explain. Sound travels at about 3000 m/s through the top layer of Earth.
