In this project, you learn how to obtain Upgrade Advisor fromMicrosoft. Upgrade Advisor for Windows 7 enables you to determine if a computer’s hardware is suitable for upgrading to Windows 7. You’ll need access to the Internet for this project. Also, use a computer running Windows XP, Vista, or 7 to access the Internet.

To learn how to obtain Upgrade Advisor:

1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Internet Explorer icon in the taskbar or click Start and click Internet Explorer.

2. In the Internet Explorer address bar, type the URL www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/ default.aspx and press Enter. (If the URL for the Microsoft download site has changed, enter www.microsoft.com and search the Microsoft Web set for downloads).

3. In the Search All Download Center box, type upgrade advisor and click the magnifying glass to start your search (see Figure 5-10).

4. Click Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor in the list of results.

5. Notice the Download button for downloading the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor software. At this point, if you have permission from your instructor and the ability to download the software, continue with the next steps. If not, close the Internet Explorer window and stop at this point.

6. Click Download.

7. Click Run in the File Download - Security Warning dialog box. If necessary, click Run again in the dialog Internet Explorer - Security Warning box.

8. In the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor dialog box, click I accept the license terms and click Install.

9. Click Close in the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor dialog box.

10. Click Start, point to All Programs, and click Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

11. In the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor dialog box, click Start check.

12. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor examines your computer for compatibility with Windows

7. (If you see a box indicating that Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor cannot access a device or resource click Cancel in that box.) The process may take only a few minutes or up to

15 or 20 minutes, depending on the computer.

13. When it is finished examining your computer, Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor displays the results of its analysis as in Figure 5-11. What issues did it find for your computer?

14. Click Close to close the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor window.
