Through this project, you practice starting an installation of Fedora 13 onto a hard drive. You need the Fedora 13 Live Media DVD that comes with this book. Note that in Step 14, you cancel the installation to prevent inadvertently writing over your personal computer hard drive.

To install Fedora 13 onto the hard drive:

1. Turn on the computer and insert the Fedora 13 DVD. Shut down and power off the computer.

2. Boot from the DVD/CD-ROM drive.

3. Wait for Fedora 13 to load from the DVD.

4. Enable the DVD to automatically log into Fedora and wait for the GNOME desktop to appear.

5. Double-click the desktop icon, Install to Hard Drive (see Figure 5-32).

6. Click Next in the initial Fedora Installer window.

7. Select the language for the keyboard, such as U.S. English and click Next (see Figure 5-33).

8. In the What type of devices will your installation involve window, make sure that Basic Storage Devices is selected. Click Next.

9. Click the checkbox for the drive on which to install the operating system and click Next.

10. Enter the hostname for the computer (check with your instructor about the name to use and the domain name) or leave the default name localhost.localdomain. Click Next.

11. In the Please select the nearest city in your time zone window, click the up and down arrows, select the city, and click Next.

12. Enter a root account password and confirm the password. Note that the root account is the administrative account used to manage the operating system. The root account password should always be safeguarded. Click Next.

13. In the What type of installation would you like? window, notice the following options:

? Use All Space—You might use this option if there is no other operating system on the computer.

? Replace Existing Linux Systems—Use this if there is a Linux system already loaded and you want to replace it.

? Shrink Current System—Enables you to shrink the space used by an operating system already installed so that the newly available space can be used by Fedora 13.

? Use Free Space—For a computer that already has one or more operating systems, because it preserves those systems and uses the free space they are not using (however, if more disk space is needed by the existing operating system(s), it may run out of space).

? Create Custom Layout—Enables you to specify the amount of disk space to use.

14. At this point you cancel the installation so that you do not inadvertently write over an existing operating system on your personal computer or a computer at your school. Close the Fedora Installer window (click the x in the top right portion of the window) and click Exit Installer.
