In this project, you’ll examine a network to see if you can determine its topology.
To view a network topology:
1. Arrange to examine the network in a lab located in your school.
2. With the help of your instructor (or on your own), determine how each workstation is connected to the network. For example, are workstations connected directly to each other, to a wall outlet, or directly to a switch? What type of cabling or wireless access is used?
3. If the workstations are connected to a wall outlet, ask if the connection eventually goes to a network device, such as a switch.
4. Ask your instructor if the network employs Ethernet communications.
5. Determine if you can see any visible terminators.
6. Using the information that you gathered and the information you learned in this chapter, attempt to identify the network as a bus, ring, star, or star-bus hybrid topology.
