Bartlett’s original reaction of xenon with PtF6 apparently yielded products other than the expected Xe+PtF6 -. However, when xenon and PtF6 are reacted in the presence of a large excess of sulfur hexafluoride, Xe+PtF6 - is apparently formed. Suggest the function of SF6 in this reaction. (See: K. Seppelt, D.
