Conceptual Challenge Problems
These rigorous, thought-provoking problems integrate conceptual learning with problem solving and are suitable for group work.
CP18.C (Section 18.3) When thermal energy is transferred to a substance at its standard melting point or boiling point, the substance melts or vaporizes, but its temperature does not change while it is doing so. It is clear then that temperature cannot be a measure of “how much energy is in a sample of matter” or the “intensity of energy in a sample of matter.” In “Qualitative Guidelines for Entropy” (p. 857) we noted that atoms and molecules are not stationary, but rather are in constant motion. When heated, their motion increases. If this is true, what can you infer that temperature measures about a sample of matter?
