The Spratly Islands include over 230 small islands and reefs in the South China Sea. China, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei have made claims on part or all of the land areas and the surrounding waters. Fights have erupted over the islands in the past, and because of the possibility of oil and gas deposits in the seabed, more conflict is expected.
