This project enables you to configure dial-up networking in Windows XP. You need access to an account that has Administrator privileges. Also, ask your instructor for the name of an ISP and an access telephone number (or you can make these up for practice).

To configure dial-up networking:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and click Network and Internet Connections (in Category View).

2. Click Set up or change your Internet connection (see Figure 8-12).

3. Click the Setup button in the Internet Properties dialog box.

4. The New Connection Wizard starts. Click Next.

5. What network connection options do you see? Record your observations.

6. Select Connect to the Internet and click Next. What options are in the Getting Ready dialog box?

7. Click Set up my connection manually, and then click Next.

8. Click Connect using a dial-up modem if this option is not already selected. Notice that this option includes the ability to connect using an analog modem or an ISDN TA. There are also options in this dialog box to connect using DSL and cable modems (for broadband connectivity). Click Next.

9. If your computer has more than one modem installed, you see a Select a Device dialog box that enables you to select which modem to configure. Select a modem if you see this dialog box (consult with your instructor if you are unsure which modem to select), and click Next.

10. Enter the name of the ISP (or use your initials to identify the connection), and then click Next.

11. Enter the phone number to use for accessing the ISP (or make up a phone number for practice). Click Next.

12. Enter the user/account name for the ISP connection and the password (or make these up for practice). Enter the password again to confirm it. Also, make sure that the following are checked:

? Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer.

? Make this the default Internet connection.

? Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection.

13. Click Next.

14. Review the parameters that you entered and click Finish.

15. On the Network and Internet Connections window, click Network Connections.

16. Right-click your new connection (under Dial-up), and click Properties.

17. Click the Networking tab. Notice that PPP and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) are automatically configured for this connection. Also, what other option is configured by default?

18. Close the Properties dialog box and then close the Network Connections window.
