The term “synapse” refers to the junction between two structures that send and receive impulses from one to the other. Different types of synapses are listed below:
• Synapse between axon terminals and dendrites – Axodendritic
• Synapse between axon terminals and cell bodies – Axosomatic
• Synapse between axon terminals and muscles – axo-muscular
• Synapse between axon terminals and other axons – Axoaxonic
• Synapse between axon terminals and other synapses – axosynpatic
The synapse that releases chemical transmitters into the extracellular fluid is known as, axoextracellular synapse. Similarly, an axosecretory synapse releases transmitters into the systemic circulation (eg; hormones). While the dendrodendritic synapse connects dendrites of two neurons.
Thus, the blanks can be filled with axodendritic; axosomatic; axo-muscular; axoaxonix; axosynaptic; axoextracellular; axosecretory; dendrodendritic.
