Roper poll on the Holocaust. The Holocaust—the Nazi Germany extermination of the Jews and others during World War II—has been well documented through film, books, and interviews with the concentration camp survivors. But a recent Roper poll found that one in five U.S. residents doubted that the Holocaust really occurred. A national sample of more than 1,000 adults and high school students was asked, “Does it seem possible or does it seem impossible to you that the Nazi extermination of the Jews never happened?” Twenty-two percent of the adults and 20% of the high school students responded “Yes.” (New York Times, May 16, 1994.) Discuss reasons for doubting the reliability of the inference.
