The hop-diffusion model of Akihiro Kusumi suggests that lipid molecules in natural membranes diffuse within “fenced” areas before hopping the molecular fence to an adjacent area. Study Figure 9.29 and estimate the number of phospholipid molecules that would be found in a typical fenced area of local diffusion. For the purpose of calculations, you can assume that the surface area of a typical phospholipid is about 60 Å2.
