A pencil mark on a sheet of paper is covered by a calcite crystal. With illumination from above, isn't the light impinging on the paper already polarized, having passed through the crystal? Why then do we see two images? Test your solution by polarizing the light from a flashlight and then reflecting it off a sheet of paper. Try specular reflection off glass; is the reflected light polarized?
