Family is a group of people who are related by blood or through marriage.Family not only consists of only family but also friends who are close to us and they too become our family.In present day there are several varieties of units present in our society.

Families are headed by grandparents or only of modern family of four and other families consists of foster or adopted children where they incoperated into their family unit.And others include single parents and families of choices and multi-generational families.But what is the most important thing is that the family should e functional.

Family structure of each family is different from others so nurses should acknowledge the traditional and non-traditional​ families structure to understand them clearly.Assesment of the family structure is important for the nurse to provide better care and promotion of health by understanding it the nurses can be successfuly able to lead the behavioral change in the family unit.

The family system theory is introduced by Dr murrey bowen.The theory explains that family is emotionally connected and when isolating the person we cannot be able to study them but subsequently we can understand the individual by the complexity of the emotion of the family.In this theory each individual can be described as the subsystem of the family.By knowing the interactions between the family the nurse can be able to understand the patient better.
