Chapter 26: Growth and Development of the Toddler

The biological mother was a teenager who chose to give her child up for adoption and Bill and Ted provided financial support to ensure that she received the appropriate prenatal care. Chapter 28: Growth and Development of the School-Age Child

As the nurse prepares Gina for her examination, Kris asks to speak to the nurse outside the examination room. Kris shares with the nurse her concerns about recent changes she has noticed in Gina. She explains that Gina’s body is beginning to change and she has made a number of comments about her body image. Kris is concerned about Gina’s self-esteem and emotional development. 1. a) The baby weight is the measure of well the baby is growing. Nurse should tell the parents that losing some weight during 5-7 days after birth is normal for every bany. A breast fed baby loses 7-10% of birth weight.

The baby should cone back to his normal weight by 10-14 days after birth.

b) The nurse practitioner should ask questions about :

• the mode of nutrition - whether baby is being breast fed or formula fed
• the frequency of feed
• the duration of feed
• Does the baby looks satisfied after being fed

Nurse can provide information to parents about importance of breast feeding. Mothers milk is best and wholesome nutrition provider for newborn. The baby should be fed atleast 8-12 times in a day. The feed should be given at an interval of 1 and half to three hours.

The baby should be provided with breast milk for atleast 1 year from borth.

C) Other information and guidance a nurse can provide is regarding the consistency of baby’s stool. It should be yellow to light brown and curdy in consistency. The baby should wet his diapers 5-7 times a day and pass stool 3-4 times a day. The baby will eventually gain weight over the weeks.
