If you lift the front wheel of a poorly maintained bicycle off the ground and then start it spinning at 0.66 rev/s, friction in the bearings causes the wheel to stop in just 13 s.

If the moment of inertia of the wheel about its axle is 0.33 kg⋅m2, what is the magnitude of the frictional torque?

Answer #1

Change in angular speed, w = 0.66 rev/sec = 0.66 x 2 pi = 4.15 rad/sec

Angular acceleration, alpha = 4.15/13 = 0.32 rad/sec^2

Torque, T = I alpha

T = 0.33 x 0.32 = 0.11 Nm

    You're riding a bicycle on level ground and begin to apply the brakes. This applies a force friction Ff to your wheel at a distance of 41.5cm from the axis. You begin to slow down at a constant rate of 3.83m/s^2. If the wheel has a radius of 0.68m and a mass of 0.91kg, what is the magnitude of Ff? Use the approximation that a bicycle wheel has a moment of inertia I=MR^2.
