Question

Il Kaview Constants I Fer Part A A complex ion is a species in which a central metal ion is allached to a group af surroundin

What is the coordination number for each of the following complexes or compounds?

  1. [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+
  2. [Ca(EDTA)]2−
  3. [Pt(NH3)4]2+
  4. Na[Ag(CN)2]

Enter the coordination numbers, in the order that the complexes are listed, as four integers separated by commas (e.g., 1,2,3,4).

What is the charge on each of the following complex ions?

  1. hexaaquairon(II), [Fe(H2O)6]?
  2. tris(carbonato)aluminate(III), [Al(CO3)3]?
  3. amminepentachloroplatinate(IV), [Pt(NH3)Cl5]?

Express the charges numerically, in the order that the complexes are listed, separated by commas. For a nonzero charge, be sure to include the sign (e.g., +1,-2,+3).

1.

What is the coordination number for each of the following complexes or compounds?

  1. [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+ : 6 monodentate ligands ( 4 x (NH3) + 2 x (Cl-) )in coordination sphere so, coordination No. = 6
  2. [Ca(EDTA)]2− : EDTA is a hexadentate ligand ; thus , coordination No. = 6
  3. [Pt(NH3)4]2+ : 4 monodentate ligands ( 4 x (NH3) ) in coordination sphere so, coordination No. = 4
  4. Na[Ag(CN)2] : 2 monodentate ligands ( 2x (CN) ) in coordination sphere so, coordination No. = 2

2.

What is the charge on each of the following complex ions?

  1. hexaaquairon(II), : [Fe(H2O)6]2+ : charge on metal ion = +2 , charge on ligand = 0 : so charge on complex ion = +2
  2. tris(carbonato)aluminate(III), [Al(CO3)3]3- :  charge on metal ion = +3 ,

charge on ligand = (-2 x 3 = -6) : so charge on complex ion = -3

3 . amminepentachloroplatinate(IV), [Pt(NH3)Cl5]- =

charge on metal ion = +4 ,

charge on ligand = (-1 x 5 = -5 + 0 ) : so charge on complex ion = -1
