Learning Medical Terminology is like learning a new language. Some say that learning medical terminology is like learning a new language, I agree with this viewpoint. In the following paragraphs, I shall give my reasons for the aforementioned position.

While it is true that each body of knowledge of Science and Arts, from Finance to Rocket Science has its own vocabulary, none of them it is comparable to medical terminology. While they all have some sophisticated words that is familiar to only those who are practicing that particular Science or vocation, medical terminology has certain rules and some level of its own grammar. While learning Medical terminology, we start by figuring out how the roots, prefixes, and suffixes fit together, then how to figure out the meanings of words used in an everyday medical setting.It also has some suffixes and prefixes of it is own primarily borrowed from Latin and or Greek, to denote certain states or conditions. To cite an example "hypo+ something will mean something is less than the normal level in the body, hyper + something will mean something is increased abnormally" , hypotension, hypertension, hyperpyrexia, hyperpyrexia are some common examples.

Again, if we look at a case file or a case study or a lab report of a patient a common man or woman who is not from the medical or nursing community is not going to understand what is written on those file as he/she doesn't " speak" medical terminology. Most of health care communication is done using medical terminology, although it is printed in English and a typical English speaker will not able to read or understand it. Naturally, when people try to learn medical terminology they unsurprisingly feel like learning a new language . Learning this new language is one of the most important academical issues faced by freshmen of medical/nursing school. And, without learning the language no health care professionals would be able to communicate with his colleagues.

In conclusion, medical terminology is like a language and learning it is like learning a new language.
