Transdermal contraceptive patch is a patch applied on the skin as a birth control method. It is a simple procedure where ot is done by a healthcare professionals or by the patient or women themselves

Explain the procedure to the patient

Collect menstrual history of the women

Steps to apply are

  • Ensure the skin is dry and intact (abdomen, thigh or upper outer arm cam be selected for site)
  • Peel one side of the liner
  • Stick the patch on the surface of the skin
  • Remove the remaining liner and stick the entire patch with gentle pressure
  • Document date (as per the hospital protocol)

The following things should not be done on the patch

  • Removing an repatching can lead to poor release of hormones
  • Not to apply on pressure site areas
  • Not to cover it with bandages
  • Not to scribble or document on the patch
