It is 0900 and you are preparing your patient’s morning medications. The patient is NPO due to a history of aspiration and has a PEG in place. You have the following medications due:

lisinopril, 12.5 mg, PO, daily

multivitamin, 1 tablet, via PEG tube, daily

1. Do you question the lisinopril order? How should the medication be administered?

2. Can these drugs be crushed, mixed, and then administered together?

3. Describe the process of administering these drugs.

Answer: Lisinopril is used primarily in the treatment of high blood pressure, heart failure, and after heart attacks and it belongs to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor class of drugs. The drug has be taken orally as indicated. But before taking these medication one must inform the healthcare professional about the allergies due to food, dye etc. or the previous medication are being taken. The lisinopril should be taken alone and not within the combination. The multiple vitamin tablet can be crushed and then administered. Lisinopril should be taken at approximately the same time each day. It can be taken before, during or after meals.
