Paternalism refers to overiding a person's action or decision for their own good.

Strongest cases of paternalism occurs

-when trying to preserve the autonomy of a patient.

-when patients are unable to choose ie children, vegetative state.

-Emergent cases with no time to consult

-When a patient is not doing what they would do if they were completely rational.

Goldmans argument against paternalism cases are

-Those who consults doctors for not necessarily desire to be cured above all else.

-patients cannot be assumed to value health or prolonged life above all else and it is not always irrational that they don't.
