1) What are the likely reasons and rationalizations Matt will give for making the payments discussed in the case?

a. It can be seen from the conversation between Kristine and BR that Bob Regan knew about the extra payment that was been asked by the government of country B and he was in favor of making payment of the same.

b. Similarly it can be derived that Matt could make the same rationalizations for making payment which were used by BR. thus it can be said that BR can give the reason of drought that was present situation in country B to justify the payment of excessive amount that was been demanded.

c. He can say that because of drought the country is facing acute shortage of utilities and as the company will have surplus utilities they can provide some support by providing them in the form of fulfilling the additional condition of the contract.

2) Are there any levers that Kirsten can use to counteract the reason and rationalizations and persuade Matt about the right thing to do?

a. If the above said rationalization were made by M, K can persuade M to do the right thing by stating that the payment that was asked to make can be seen as bribery and if discovered by any authority can lead to adverse consequences. She can also say that if payment was made once it will encourage the government of country B and then the payment had to be made every time when the government of this country will demand.

2. She can also contend that huge funds will be used from the companies account if the payment was made. Thus above mentioned statement can be used by K to persuade M for doing the right thing.
