Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, sometimes caused by viral infection.

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that is highly contagious, mainly transmit through orofecal route, direct contact, sharing needles and through the contaminated blood transfusion.
( In Michigan, Hepatitis A outbreak happened in 2016 to 2019. This outbreak was mainly due to the increased risk factors in Michigan such as sharing the needles ( drug abuse-52%), homeless people ( 14%), Sex between Men to men ( 13%) and Hepatitis B and C infected people.)
The main preventive strategy is vaccination against Hepatitis A.
One of the major harmful behaviour is unhygienic handling of food. The main source of Hepatitis A virus is contaminated food and water . A strategic programme that includes a package of interventions for the food services can eliminate the transmission through contaminated food and water.
The interventions are:
* A well disinfected area ( kitchen and the other facilities) for food cooking, handling, keeping and serving.
* Make sure that handwashing steps are posted in the areas, wherever necessary .
*Educate all the food employees and public regarding the personal hygiene and thorough handwashing.
People who handle food should wash their hands for 15- 20 seconds in running water after rinsing and neatly dry their hands.
* Avoid bare hand contact with cooked food.
( Other preventive measures includes counselling and education of high risk groups ( men who have sex with men, lesbians, drug abuse ) to avoid sexual activity with infected person, use condoms for safe sex , avoid sharing the syringes. Public education regarding good hygiene,thourough handwashing after using bathrooms and avoid having raw food or drinking unsafe water especially while travelling in an area with poor sanitation. )
