Question
I not sure what to tell my friend other than there is more pressure the further down you go. Can someone give a better answer? Please draw a force balance or something to show a visual.

When dunking Oreos why does the cookie get softer quicker when it is in the vertical position as oppose to being in the horizontal position? Science people explain.
Im assuming you are leaving the cookie untouched when in the horizontal position, and it is floating at the top of the milk. This makes absorption happen mostly on the bottom of the cookie, whereas if you have it in vertically, both sides of the cookie have more milk to absorb, allowing a quicker absorption. on Fri Like More nope l fully submerge Oreo in both cases. Ran a timer for 25 seconds on each position. Vertical absorbed milk (2%) all the way through each end of the cookie. Horizontal absorbed only the outside half of each side of the cookie. There was still quite a bit of crispy-ness on the faces of each cookie facing the cream side.

Answer #1

When it is in vertical position then force of gravity works all along it . On each small section of cookie the weight of the part of cookie works to stretch it and to make it more soft. Lh
