The only type of reaction in which both reactants and products are always compounds is "double replacement reaction". In all other reactions, along with compounds, elements or molecules can be involved as reactants or products.

Examples:

1. Combustion reaction:

CH4 + O2 ------------------- CO2 + H2O

Here O2 is molecule.

2. Combination reactions:

H2 + Cl2 --------------------- 2HCl

Here, H2 and Cl2 are molecules.

3. Single replacement reaction:

Mg + CuSO4 ---------------------Cu + MgSO4

Here, Mg and Cu are elements.

4. Decomposition reaction:

2 Al2O3------------------------------ 4 Al+ 3O2

Here element Al and molecule O2 are involved.

5. Double replacement reaction

Here alone both reactants and products are always compounds. The typical double replacement reaction can be written as

AB + CD------------------------ AD + BC

KBr + AgNO3  --------------------------- KNO3 + AgBr
