Answer #1

The (1 - alpha ) confidence interval for standard deviation is,(n - 1)s2 (n - 1)s2 2 2 a/2 2

where n is the sample size, s is the sample standard deviation and chi^2_{i} is the lower ith point of the chi^2 distribution with df 24 [Which can be obtained by MS Excel using the code CHIINV(i.24)].

s = 1.5. n = 25, 1 - alpha = 0.95 => alpha = 0.05, 10,025 = 12.4011 and X1-0.025 = 39.3641.

So, the 95% confidence interval become

24 2.25 39.3641 21 < σく12124021

=> 1.1712 < sigma < 2.0867
