It is generally defined by presence of low serum bicarbonate concentration ( normal range 22-28mEq/L).. Patient will have low urine PH depending on presence or absence of a respiratory alkalosis either normal or elevated..the two organ where acid excretion are lungs and the kidney..lot of ketones in blood turn in to a acidic..co2-Hco3 buffering system responsible for metabolic acidosis..due to High CO2 there will be low blood PH.. formula will be H+HCo3 <->H2co3 <->CO2 +H2o..H+ ions are excreted in the proximal tubule,where they combine with HCo3 to form carboric acid H2co3.. formula will be CO2 +H2o <->H2co3 <->H+ HCo3

Clinical manifestations:

Diaphoresis,tachycardia, headache, confusion,weakness, tiredness,low appitite,hyperkalemia, hypercalcaemia,hypercalciuria

PH <7.35, HCo3 <22mmol/ l, Pco2<35, osmolar gap >10
