Question

2. A medical group is developing a new diabetes therapy that they hope will lower a patients lc measurement. They have a control group of 137 patients with a mean Alc of 8.43 and a sample standard deviation of Sc-1.78. The researcher would like to compare these numbers o a treatment group. The Alc measurements for the 5 subjects in the treatment group were 4.9 5.2 6.8 8.7 9.1 We will assume that these measurements are independent and the variance in both groups is the same. We want to test if the mean of Alc measurements in the treatment group is significantly lower. (a) Calculate an estimate of the variance of the Alc measurements. (b) Calculate the appropriate test statistic for this test. (c) What is the distribution of the test statistic under the null hypothesis? How many degrees of freedom does it have? (d) Use a large sample approximation to find a P value for this test. (e) What do we conclude about the effectiveness of the medication?

Answer #1

(ni-1) sį t (n2-1)s-= 3.1849 (a) Estimate of the varianceni + n2-2 Here, n1 = sample size of control group = 137, s1 = sample

where, x-sample mean for control group = 8.43 and x2 = sample mean of treatment group= 6.94. Value of 1.0275 (c) Under null h

In diabetes management, an important treatment goal is to lower the hemoglobin A1c (glycosylated hemoglobin, approximates the percentage of red blood cells damaged by high blood sugar).             Suppose we wanted to test the hypothesis that Drug A is more effective than Drug B in lowing the A1c level. Healthy people who do not have diabetes have an A1c between 4 and 5. The goal in diabetes management is often to bring a higher A1c (such as 9 or above)...

Il. You test your diabetes drug (to control blood glucose levels) in laboratory rats which are genetically engineered to have diabetes. You give the drug to six (6) of your diabetic rats, and give another six (6) diabetic rats a placebo (which does not contain the drug), and compare blood glucose levels in the two groups of rats. The measurements of blood glucose levels for both groups of rats, along with means and standard deviations for each group, are given...

A student ran a between-subjects experiment comparing three treatments for depression: cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), client-centered therapy (CCT), and a no-treatment condition. Subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental condi- tion. After a sufficient duration on these treatments, the difference in subject’s depression scores pre/post study were measured using a valid depression assessment instrument. The data are summarized in the tables below. Conduct a Oneway ANOVA with α = 0.05 by first completing the values in the lower table, then using...

General Psychology: Clinicians at a small clinic have been introduced to a new method to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their clients for veterans. Research indicates that virtual reality (VR) is a highly effective treatment option for patients with PTSD. Currently, the clinic uses only cognitive processing therapy (CPT) with their patients suffering from PTSD. The clinicians would like to find out whether VR therapy has different results from CPT therapy. The measure used by the clinic to measure...

STATISTICS HYPOTHESIS It appears that not all people are equally vulnerable to cancer. People from some ethnic groups have higher or lower than average chances of developing certain types of cancer. Jennifer's manager Dr. Steinberg thinks that the company's insurance policy should reflect this fact and constantly raises this question in the meetings. To be more convincing, he asked Jennifer Nguyen to take a random sample of those Healthy Life clients who belong to ethnic group X (at least on...
