Answer #1

Lucas test is used to distinguish between Primary, Secondary, Tertiary alcohols.

Lucas reagent: conc.HCl and anhydrous ZnCl2

1) Tertiary alcohols give turbidity immediately with Lucas reagent.

R3C-OH + conc.HCl/anhydrous ZnCl2 ------------------> R3C-Cl + H2O

2)  Secondary alcohols give turbidity in 5 min with Lucas reagent.

R2CH-OH + conc.HCl/anhydrous ZnCl2 ------------------> R2CH-Cl + H2O

3) Primary alcohols do not react with Lucas reagent, hence no turbidity will be formed.

RCH2-OH + conc.HCl/anhydrous ZnCl2 ------------------> No reaction

--------

Phenol also do not react with Lucas reagent, hence no turbidity will be formed. Because, in lucas test carbocation will be formed. Phenol cannot form carbocation with Lucas reagent.
