First degree burns on lower abdomen

Pathophysiology related to client problem

The pathophysiology of burns is the result of inflammatory activity related to increases micro-vascular permeability that cause increased edema. The process is also characterized by vasodilation and increased vascular activity, and extracellular osmotic activity. Moreover the interstitial changes of tissue occurs after injury that is important in burn pathophysiology.

Health promotion and disease prevention

Burns cause damage to to different layers of skins and the elements under the skin such as sweat glands, hair follicles and oil glands. The health promotion in such case can be enhanced by promoting patient education regarding burn treatment and management.

ASSESSMENT

Risk factor

Occupational hazards, lack of safety, poverty, overcrowding, household function, hot metal industry workers etc.

Expected findings

First degree burn affects the epidermis that is the outer layer of the skin, the local site of burn is red, painful, dry and no blisters. some degree of changes in skin color is identified

Diagnostic procedure

first degree burns are usually diagnosed through physical examination and observation of the depth of skin involvement

Safety consideration

Heat the water till 120 degree F

Prevent children and young people to stay close to household fire

Occupational worker in places where fire and hot chemicals are concerned should take safety measures

Avoid playing with fire or any hot substances

PATIENT CENTERED CARE

Nursing care

Provide cold compression on the burnt part and apply ice packs, apply ointment as prescribed by the doctor to relief the patient from pain

Medication

Antibiotics and pain medications would be prescribed

Therapeutic procedure

No dressing required only application of healing ointment and cream

Client education

patient is advised and educated regarding the safety measures and how to prevent such incident from happening again, also the burn management is educated to the patient

Inter-professional care

Collaboration of multidisciplinary team to care for the patient and address all their physical, emotional and social needs

Complication

Wound infection is rare but can occur

Change in skin color with time
