Answer #1

Intravenous ampicillin sodium 500 mg to be administered over 60 minutes.

The concentration of the IV solution is given as 30 mg /mL

1mL contains 30 mg of ampicillin sodium

Thus the total volume of IV ampicillin sodium to be administered in mL in 60 minutes = 500mg \large \div 30 mg = 16.666 or 16.7 mL

mcgtt/ min means micro drip rate or drops per minute by using a micro drip tube.

The universal drop factor for a micro drip tube is 60 drops per minute which means 60 drops from a micro drip tube can deliver 1 mL of solution.

The formula for drop rate calculation is,

Total volume of solution to be administered in 60 minutes (mL/hr) x drop factor = drops / minutes

Time in minutes

16.7 x 60 = 16.7 mcgtt/min

60

Thus the answer is, the flow rate of IV ampicillin sodium 500 mg in 60 minutes is 16.7 mcgtt/ min
