Parkinson's disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that occurs when the neurons within the brain responsible for producing the chemical dopamine become impaired or die.

3) INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE

Parkinson's Disease (PD) affect over a million people in the US and approximately 4 million world wide

Rare before age 30. Approximately 4% are diagnosed before age 50 (average age onset 60)

Risk for the disease increases with age. Affects 1 in 20 over age 80. Affects men more than women. Slightly more prevalent among Caucasians. Annual financial burden in excess of $5 billion.

5) PD severity with someone who is stage 3 :-

- mild to moderate disease

- balance impairment

- inability to walk straight and stand properly

- noticeable slowing of physical movement

- physically independent
