4. Carbohydrates counts is a very important skill to learn when you have diabetes as it helps to have a tight control on diabetes and hence the amount of insulin needed . To count the carbs grams in the food you need to know how many carbs are in each type of food you eat even it is a slice of bread or lettuce etc . Packaged food has labels which tells us the amount of carbohydrates it have . For those food which are not packed ,you need to know the standard portions of carbohydrates . Each serving size or standard portions has 15 gm of carbs .

In advanced carbs counting , if a food has carbohydrates and fibers then the half of the total amount of fibers is substracted from the total amount of carbohydrates and the substracted outcome is the amount of carbohydrates in that food .

Exchange list means each item on the particular list in a portion listed may be interchanged with any other food item on the same list . Basically it means substitution. This exchange list can be used to manage nutrition in Diabetic patients because what all food items are restricted in these patients that nutrients can be supplemented by providing another substitutes for example instead of carbohydrates we can give protein .

5. Meal plan for breakfast :-

Fruit - 1/2-1 cup

Meat - 1oz

Bread - 30gm

Fat - 1/2 tsp to 1-2 table spoon
