Tobacco usage is responsible for more than one of every six deaths occurring in United States from pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. Smoking is the most important single preventable cause of death and disease in the country. About 85% of lung cancers are attributable to inhalation of carcinogenic chemicals such as cigarette smoking. Passive smoking has been identified as a possible cause of lung cancer in non smokers. People who are involuntarily exposed to tobacco smoke in a closed environment are at increased risk of developing respiratory diseases than to people unexposed to smoke. An average life time passive smoke exposure to a smoking spouse or partner, increases a non smoker's risk for lung cancer by about 35% when compared to risk of 100% for a lifetime of active smoking. So the passive smokers may be children , wife or partner , pregnant women , elderly people or other family members in home. In public places, public transport and work places the people there may get affected from passive smoking.Immuno compromised individuals also may be affected if they were passive smokers.

Passive smokers inhale same harmful chemicals that smokers inhale. Till now no safe level of exposure for passive smoking is estimated.This passive smoking may trigger asthmatic attacks in children , may make them sick often and has ability to catch more lung infections due to the carcinogens in the smoke. In infants passive smoking may lead to sudden infant death syndrome or respiratory distress .In elderly people the carcinogens in smoke may serve as a precursor to lung infections and prolonged exposure may lead to risk for lung cancers as they have weak immune systems.Thus airlaws should be followed and the smoking persons should be segregated and made to smoke in a closed environment to save others . Smoking is injurious to health.
