Federal Privacy and Security Standardization efforts on Electronic Health Records :

  United States Health and Human Services and also the Centre for Medicare and Medicaid Services gives utmost importance and had implemented security services over Electronic Health Records.Also Office of Civil Rights OCR , has also had a major role in implementation of activities that protects protected health information that is PHI.This also includes HIPAA, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

• Maintaining patient records and thus creating security and safety.
• Developing trust in the patients by creating certain law such as even if the patient has to access his or her own personal records they need to request hospital staff.
• Only authorized people can access those records
• Practicing of privacy rule, security rule and also breach notification rule as a part of HIPAA
• Notice of privacy practices and also educating the staff on when can authorized people can access the health information of the patient etc.
• Conducting sessions on HIPAA privacy practices, OCR rules and the penalties involved.
• Educating staff about administrative safeguards, physical safeguards, organizational standards etc.
• Cyber security, encryption based security, incentive programmes conducted by Medicare are some of the privacy practices.
