In a Word document, you are asked to discuss the following points in a thoughtful, accurate and supported manner using key pieces of information from the literature:

  • Compare a “typical” diet (using the pre-set AMDRs found within the Harris Benedict Calculator) with the diet that would be required for your special population of people;
  • Highlight 3 key adjustments (think nutrients, vitamins, minerals) to your special population diet that would be required to maintain optimal health;
  • Suggest replacement food options for your population, ensuring that you include a description of why these replacements will be beneficial;
  • Describe the health (or other) consequences of not adjusting the diet for your special population properly.

All references must be properly cited using APA-formatting, inclusive of in-text citations and a full reference list at the end of the document. You must provide a minimum of 2 valid references to support your thoughts.

A clear, APA-formatted title page should accompany your document as well.

Your report (not including your reference list or title page) should between 750 and 1000 words. This will require clear, concise descriptions of your thoughts to the above points.

Harris-Benedict calculator

one of the three most popular BMR formulas. Knowing your BMR (basal metabolic weight) your diet and lifestyle rate can be determined.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is equivalent to the amount of energy (in the form of calories) that your body needs to function if it were to rest for 24 hours.

The calculators of BMR are as follows:

  • For men: BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 5 x age (years) + 5

  • For women: BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 5 x age (years) – 161

IMPACT OF WESTERN DIET:

Reference provided states that:

Infectious diseases and malnutrition were the major medical problems in most Asian countries before World War II and are still so today in some parts of Asia. The structure of diseases has been dramatically changed in many Asian countries after World War II, in parallel with a rapid development of the economy followed by Westernization of lifestyles. The GNP has been increased by 20 times in Japan, 43 times in Korea, and 17 times in Thailand in the past 25 yr and lifestyles in housing, clothing, and eating have been westernized in these countries. Westernization of diets is seen in an increase of protein and fat consumption at meals and the prevalence of American-style fast foods, such as hamburgers and fried chicken. In Japan, Korea, and Thailand, the three leading causes of death today are neoplasms, heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease, as they are in Europe and North America. The cost for cardiovascular disease in Japan in 1996 was $48 billion, accounting for 7% of the national budget. Chronic diseases resulting from atherosclerosis are not only a medical, but also a growing economic problem in Asian, as well as Western countries. Thus, more attention is required, aimed at prevention of risk factors for these chronic diseases by nutritional intervention. In this chapter, the relationship between Westernization of diets and chronic diseases based on atherosclerosis or their risk factors in Asian countries is reviewed. Nutritional recommendations are described in reference to prevention of risk factors for chronic diseases based on atherosclerosis.

From the above reference for the impact of western diet clears shows the difference between the past and impact now.
