Probenecide comes under the class of uricosurics due to its action on kidneys. It increase uric acid secretion in the renal tubule and prevent the reuptake. Probenecide is commonly given as a combination therapy with many penicillin group of antibiotics because the excretion mechanism of both drugs are similar. It increase the blood level of the drug by reducing the excretion of the drug through kidneys. Increased blood level of drug leads to increase in the duration of action of the drug. Probenecide will not enhance the antibacterial activity( killing more number of bacteria in a given time) of the drug but it can help the drug to stay in blood for more time and kill more number of bacteria . Probenecide has no effect on reducing the allergic reaction.
