tream REPORT FOR EXPERIMENT 9 (continued) NAME F. Solubility vs. Temperature; Saturated and Unsaturated Solutions Data Table:

A. What is the percentage by mass of NaCl in saturated solution of sodium chloride at 50°C?

B. Calculate the solubility of potassium bromide at 23°C? Hint: assume that the solubility increases by an equal amount for each degree between 20°C and 30°C?

C. A saturated solution of barium chloride at 30°C contains 150g water. How much additional barium chloride can be dissolved by heating this solution to 60°C?

Answer #1

Part A.

36.69 g/100 ml is the solubility of NaCl at 50 oC.

To obtain % by mass, you take the mass of NaCl divided by the total mass * 100

Density of H2O at 50o is about 0.988 g/mL

i.e. 100 ml H2O at 50o = 100 mL x 0.988 g/mL = 98.8 g

Mass of NaCl = 36.69 g

Total mass = 36.69 g + 98.8 g = 135.49 g

mass % NaCl = (36.69 g/135.49 g) * 100 = 27.1%

Saturated, Unsaturated & Supersaturated Solutions Solution, in which the concentration of solute is that determined by its solubility (at given temperature) is called SATURATED solution. One cannot add more solute to such a solution. We also say that a saturated solution is in equilibrium with pure solute: If we add solid Nacl to an already saturated solution of NaCl, that solid remains in equilibrium with dissolved Naci. Solution containing less solute than would be in the saturated solution, is UNSATURATED...
