Question

A boat has a mass of 6800 kg. Its engines generate a drive force of 3500 N, due west, while the wind exerts a force of 670 N, due east, and the water exerts a resistive force of 1200 N due east. What is the magnitude and direction of the boats acceleration? m/s2-Select north south Answer| east Practice Another Version west

Answer #1

Here ,

let east is the positive direction

Using second law of motion

net force = mass * acceleration

-3500 + 670 + 1200 = 6800 * a

a = -0.24 m/s^2

the boat's acceleration is 0.24 m/s^2 towards the west direction
