Necrosis is defined as the cell death due to injury, infection or toxins. Necrosis can be classified into :

1. Coagulation necrosis

2. Liquefactive necrosis

3. Gangrenous necrosis

4. Caseous necrosis

5. Fat necrosis

6. Fibrinoid necrosis

a. Myocardial infarction is characterised by damage to the cells caused by oxygen deprivation due to impaired blood supply to the muscle of heart. Coagulative necrosis is seen in such infarction.

b. Tuberculosis of lung results in necrosis of lung parenchyma due to bacterial infection. Caseous necrosis is seen in such type of cell death.

c. Acute pancreatitis results in necrosis of the fat tissue present in the membrane of pancreas due to enzymatic activity of lipases. This results in fat necrosis.

d. Cerebral infarcts develops due to hypoxic injury caused to the cells in CNS. This results in pus and abscess formation in the area of dead tissue by the action of lysosomes and other digestive enzymes. Liquefactive necrosis is seen in cerebral infarcts.
